Allan Lake

Love Was All Around

 (a suburb of Melbourne, Australia)

Egret was fishing
in murky Melbourne canal
as I came round the bend
on my sneaky old bike.
It froze; I stopped; eyes met
and we stayed like that for awhile
at appropriate social distance.
Soft breast feathers waved in breeze
as we acted nonchalant, shifted a bit,
neither making any serious move.
Somewhere in my head for a reason
that’s still just beyond me: theme
music from long gone TV series,
which I hummed lovingly
to the smitten bird.
