Rudy Ruiz writes about cultural identity, multicultural and intergenerational relationships, immigration, social justice, and climate change. “Allegiance” is an excerpt from a manuscript based on his upbringing along the Texas-Mexico border. His novel, The Resurrection of Fulgencio Ramirez, received two Gold Medals at the 2021 International Latino Book Awards, including the Rudolfo Anaya Prize for Best Latino-Focused Fiction. The novel was also a Finalist for the Western Writers of America Spur Award. His short story collection, Seven for the Revolution, won four International Latino Book Awards. In 2017, Rudy’s short fiction garnered the Gulf Coast Prize in Fiction. His stories have appeared in journals including Notre Dame Review, The Ninth Letter, and New Texas.
